Your flu shot....its donation time....and taxes

Hello Everyone!  Its been a while since my last post.  The holidays and my DIY kitchen remodel is playing havoc on  my "time-management" skills.

I think more of us need to realize that Do-It-Youself applies to many things in life.  We need to realize that if we want something done, then we NEED TO MAKE SURE ITS DONE AND IF NOT THEN DO IT YOURSELF.  Very simple.  Very easy to say.  It applies to so many things, but some of us tend to think that someone else will take care of it.  We need to stop that type of thinking.

I mentioned my kitchen remodel.  All of which I'm hoping to do for less than 3 grand...including the  bamboo floor.  Now its taking me a little while, but I work for free.   I sanded/primed/painted my original cabinets and "recycled" old oak ones that someone else took out of their kitchen. I am adding new doors and drawer fronts.  I read about how to tile your kitchen countertop, and my husband and I came up with a really nice design for the tile.  I shopped around and found porcelain tile for pennies of its original price [at my local Lowe's store.] I found a really nice kitchen sink that was $100 off an Home Depot, because it was a return.  I cleaned up my old kitchen faucet and it looks great.  I also did the same for my dishwasher, fridge, range-top, and oven.  I am reading up on how to install an engineered floor. I am just starting to look around for the flooring, but I am hoping that one of the local stores decides to "dump" one of their lines of engineered bamboo.  I didn't spend a lot of money.  I don't have granite.  I don't have designer appliances.  I will have a nice looking kitchen that frees up any other monies to apply towards any future family vacations.

A lot has happened in the last month. We had the terrible shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  Now the country in being torn every which way with talks about how to prevent any future violence.  The Christmas holidays came and went.  I seemed as thought the Cleveland area experienced very mild Christmas weather.  I hope that everyone was able to spread Christmas cheer to everyone.  For my family, we stayed home and hosted part of my husband's family.  Our days were filled with eating and a few nights we enjoyed some of the holiday classics.  Of course the movie Elf was watched more than a couple of times.

I wanted to bring up flu season.  I am not sure if the flu is really that bad or if the press wants to divert our attention away from all the other bad things that are happening around the US.  That being said, please make sure you have your flu shot.  If not, you can call your local Board of Health and ask them where their flu shot clinics are in your area.  I know that our local supermarket and Walgreens offers flu shots, but often the amounts are limited.

So now it is officially mid-January.  Time to start purging your house of unwanted items.  Please donate them to the charity of your choice.  I am partial to Habitat for Humanity and charities that help out military veterans.

It should also be a time that you are starting to get all your taxes together.  Personally, I input all the data into a spreadsheet and provide that to my account.  This saves me loads of money, as the actually inputting takes me hours to do..but my labor is free!  Taxes are a scary thing.  I like my accountant, but some people choose to do their own taxes.  If not, then there are lots of free tax clinics to visit in the tri-county area.  A simple google search should bring up all the information you need.

I read somewhere that many of the stores start to really clear out their inventory starting January 16th.  As you all know, that day is tomorrow.  I'll be sure to keep close eye on most of the stores and post any great sales that I see.

I love Neiman Marcus, but with 4 kids and me being a stay-home mom, there's not a real need for me to be "on pace" with the latest and greatest in fashions.  The great news is that Target has a few lines from some really nice designers.  Currently they have 50% many of the items.

Check out this little girl's dress. It is adoreable.  I wish I still had a reason to buy this, but my little girl is way too old for this dress! http://www.target.com/p/jason-wu-girl-s-printed-dress/-/A-14206600#prodSlot=medium_1_22

Frozen Foods NOT TO EAT while you are dieting!

I know a ton of you are dieting over the Christmas Holiday Season.  I saw this list on "Eat This Not That" website and felt the need to pass it on!

6 WORST FROZEN DIET FOODS

6. #6: WORST FROZEN DESSERT:

Ben & Jerry’s FroYo Phish Food (1/2 cup)

240 calories, 6 g fat (4.5 g saturated), 27 g sugars

Frozen yogurt is often a healthy alternative to ice cream,
but not this version. In fact, it has 100 more calories than
your standard vanilla frozen treat. That’s largely due to coconut oil and butter
being high on the ingredient list—not to mention nearly a half-dozen Oreos'
worth of sugar in every scoop.

EAT DESSERT EVERY DAY! You can—and not put on an extra pound.
You just need to know which desserts to indulge in, and which to avoid.
Start here: 14 Worst Desserts in America.

EAT THIS INSTEAD!

Haagen-Dazs Chocolate All Natural Sorbet

130 calories, 0.5 g fat (0 g saturated), 21 g sugars

5. #5: WORST FROZEN BEEF MEAL:

Lean Cuisine Beef Chow Fun

320 calories, 5 g fat (1.5 g saturated),
520 mg sodium, 18 g sugars

The calorie toll here isn't so bad, but the sugar
impact is unacceptable. This isn't dessert, after all. You could have a
scoop of Edy's Slow Churned Rocky Road ice cream and still cut 6
grams of sugar. The problem here is Lean Cuisine's “sweet and spicy”
Asian sauce. Think of it as pancake syrup with a few spices stirred in.

AMERICA'S WORST FOODS: One of the best things about the
brand-new Eat This, Not That! 2012 is that it helps you find fat-fighting
food no matter where you are: movie theater, coffee shop, vending machine.
It also includes this list of foods that should never see the inside of your belly:
The NEW 20 Worst Foods in America.

EAT THIS INSTEAD!

Lean Cuisine Garlic Beef & Broccoli

170 calories, 6 g fat (2 g saturated),
670 mg sodium, 5 g sugars

4. #4: WORST FROZEN MEXICAN MEAL:

Cedarlane Roasted Chile Relleno

400 calories, 20 g fat (12 g saturated),
770 mg sodium

This box advertises “all natural” in the corner. Maybe, but Monterey jack
and cheddar cheese, which make up two of the first five ingredients,
are still naturally full of fat. And that’s how Cedarlane stuffs this relatively
small dish with 60 percent of your day’s heart-unhealthy saturated fat.

EAT THIS INSTEAD!

Kashi Spicy Black Bean Enchilada

260 calories, 7 g fat (1 g saturated), 600 mg sodium

3. #3: WORST FROZEN CHICKEN DISH:

Healthy Choice Roasted Sesame Chicken

440 calories, 9 g fat (1.5 g saturated),
470 mg sodium, 23 g sugars

Remove the calming green packaging and the ostentatious use of
"healthy" in the name, and you'll see this meal for what it is: fried
chicken swimming in sugary syrup. Healthy Choice claims this is
“roasted” chicken, but an inspection of the ingredient statement
reveals the meat is coated in corn flour and cooked in vegetable oil.
At KFC they call that "fried."

FOWL FOULS: Chicken is a lean, fat-fighting protein. But it's also
the most abused food in American restuarants. Here's the evidence:
The Worst Chicken Dishes in America

EAT THIS INSTEAD!

Healthy Choice Café Steamers

Lemon Garlic Chicken and Shrimp

260 calories, 6 g fat (2 g saturated), 350 mg sodium, 4 g sugars

2. #2: WORST FROZEN BURRITO:

Evol Burritos Egg & Sausage

480 calories, 16 g fat (5 g saturated), 850 mg sodium

We love Evol’s commitment to unadulterated
produce and naturally raised meats, but "natural"
alone won't keep fat off your body. Sausage is still the first ingredient in
this beast of a morning wrap, and as such, it saddles you with 25 percent
of your day’s fat and saturated fat, 35 percent of your sodium, and half your
cholesterol. These numbers don’t make Evol evil, but they don’t make this
 burrito nutritious either.

BREAKFAST BOMBSHELLS: Research shows that those who eat a
balanced breakfast consume fewer calories over the course of the day.
But do the first meal wrong, and you can set yourself up for calorie overload.
Learn how not to start your day: 18 Worst Breakfasts in America.

EAT THIS INSTEAD!

Amy’s Breakfast Burrito

270 calories, 8 g fat (1 g saturated), 540 mg sodium

1. #1: WORST FROZEN PASTA DISH:

Amy’s Rice Macaroni with Non-Dairy Cheeze

520 calories, 22 g fat (5 g saturated), 740 mg sodium

Amy’s casts itself as the healthy alternative to other frozen meals,
and often that's true. But not here. “Made with organic pasta,” as the package
proclaims, means nothing if you’re consuming an oil-soaked cheese-alternative
that crams in more than a third of your day’s fat allotment. For the same amount
of calories, you could eat two packages of Banquet’s macaroni and cheese.
